britain’s lost routes.

Griff Rhys Jones sets out upon an epic adventure to uncover the lost routes of Britain.

Britain was once a difficult country to cross, with roads few and paths obscure. Yet for faith, fortune, pleasure and necessity our ancestors travelled from one end of the country to the other along a vast network of routes spread throughout the nation. In a bid to uncover the forgotten pathways that shaped Britain, Griff re-traces the routes these people took, the experiences they encountered along the way, the people they met and the methods of travel they used.

Ep1.
He begins by retracing Queen Elizabeth I's route through the Cotswolds and into the West Country, recreating the baggage train the monarch took with her, sampling Elizabethan forms of transport and visiting some of the castles and stately homes she stopped at along the way.

Ep2.
Griff joins the crew of a Thames sailing barge to recreate the journey that similar vessels once made from the east coast into London.

Ep3.
Accompanied by a herd of cows, Griff retraces the 250-mile 19th century droving route from the Isle of Skye to Falkirk.

Ep4.
The actor and five companions follow the route thousands of medieval pilgrims took from Holywell, Flintshire, to St Davids in Pembrokeshire.
