Natur Nadolig Iolo

S4C Wales 23 December 2014 - Welsh with embedded English subtitles

The robin, mistletoe, yew and pine trees, holly and ivy are all connected to Christmas. But how did these associations come about? In a special festive programme, Iolo Williams uncovers the wild nature of Yuletide. The most conspicuous winter plants and animals play a role in many of the traditions including Father Christmas and his reindeer, feasting on wild goose, collecting cranberries and nuts and decorating the house and tree. But Christmas past was not a safe period for wildlife; the red squirrel and the wren were both hunted during Yuletide - a holiday that lasted twelve days in olden times, during the darkest and quietest period of the year.
