Seedlings of the North-Western European Lowland

The first part of the book consists of an Index and Key to groups of seedling. These are followed by short descriptions of seedlings, identified throughout by scientific name only, arranged and numbered by families.

The main part of the book consists of accurate and careful drawings of seedlings, magnified up to six times and numbered according to the descriptions. Cultivated plants which frequently occur spontaneously are included as well as wild plants so that there are many genera and species of horticultural interest, from Adonis to Viola and Asparagus officinalis to Vicia faba. The book is too large (and too expensive) to be a pocket book and seedlings are drawn in profile only, without a top view, so that in many cases uprooting may be necessary for identification. The drawings are, however, very natural, although claimed to have been done mainly from herbarium specimens. The book will form a welcome and useful addition to the list of specialized European floras.
