Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2014.

Monty, Rachel and Joe preview the Royal Horticultural Society's 2014 Hampton Court Palace Flower Show before the gates open. In the first of three programmes Monty takes a look around the newly planted Palace kitchen garden and discovers what Henry VIII would have demanded for dinner. Joe gets a flavour of the large show gardens and Rachel reveals the coveted title of Rose of the Year.

Angus goes back to school to demonstrate some of the basics of potting up plants to give them the best chance of success, Jane explores a garden started and run by an African migrant to benefit other new Australians by helping them engage with their new community, and Josh is showing how to take advantage of tricky spots in the garden with a range of herbs for every situation. Also, Jerry and an arborist look at some spectacular old trees and demonstrate some techniques for how to manage them in their old age while John visits one of the most visited private gardens in Australia, Bolobek, in the foothills of Mount Macedon.

With the garden growing before his eyes, Monty has plenty to be getting on with at Longmeadow. In preparation for beautiful late summer grass borders, he fills the gaps that the diseased box hedges have left with grasses he has raised from seed. Joe casts his designer's eye over a city garden in London and highlights the key principles to be kept in mind when making the most of a small space, and pay a visit to a stunning arts-and-crafts-style garden, High Glanau Manor near Monmouth, where colour and proportion come together in perfect harmony.

Costa finds out all about the history of one of Australia's oldest and most famous horticultural exports - the Granny Smith apple. Sophie drops in on a friend whose garden is well advanced for its young age, and gets some tips on how he's done it, and Tino looks at what's done well in the new patch, and shows how to turn failures into opportunities for more planting. Also, Jane is in the Dandenong Ranges visiting a large garden that's filled with colourful treasures around every corner, while Josh introduces one of his favourite stories from the GA archives involving a productive garden, a cheeky local and an even cheekier nickname.
